Spring Home Prep & Cleaning Checklist

Ah, spring. The season of sunshine, allergies… and cleaning. Whether you’re eager to scrub every corner or just want to make sure your house doesn’t fall apart, a little prep goes a long way. Here’s your all-in-one guide to get your home sparkling, safe, and ready for warmer days.

Quick “To Do’s”

  • Replace smoke detector batteries – do this at Daylight Savings Time each year to keep you on track
  • Check carbon monoxide detectors (they expire after 5–7 years)
  • Dust ceiling fans, baseboards, shelves
  • Wash curtains and wipe blinds
  • Clean your dryer vent. (If your clothes are taking longer to dry, it’s probably overdue.)
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture
  • Rent a carpet cleaner (especially if you have pets) and have your carpets cleaned

Bonus: These tasks help cut down on allergens and freshen up your indoor air.

Indoor Spring Cleaning

Kitchen

  • Deep clean the fridge, oven, microwave, and toaster
  • Wipe down cabinets and pantry shelves
  • Check expiration dates on food and condiments while you’re at it

Windows & Screens

  • Wipe glass inside and out
  • Patch small screen holes to keep bugs outside where they belong

Basement & Attic

  • Look for signs of mold, pests, or moisture
  • Gray/black blotches? Could be mold—have it professionally checked
  • Replace dryer and washer hoses if cracked

Utilities

  • Clean around the A/C compressor—remove weeds and debris
  • Replace HVAC air filters
  • Drain your water heater to flush out sediment buildup
  • Inspect sump pump to ensure it’s working properly
  • Schedule a professional HVAC tune-up to keep your system humming smoothly
  • Make sure all breakers are labeled properly in your electrical panel and look for signs of corrosion or wear.
  • If your panel feels warm to the touch or if breakers trip frequently, it’s time to call an electrician.
  • Look under sinks, around toilets, and near your water heater for moisture or corrosion.
  • Turn on outside hose bibs to check for cracks or winter damage (do this before you hook up the hose).

Outdoor Spring Home Inspection

Exterior Walls & Foundation

  • Look for cracks, water stains, or signs of pests
  • Water stains = potential gutter issues
  • Cracks in the foundation? Call a professional—don’t DIY this one.

Windows & Doors

  • Check for drafty spots or moisture between panes
  • Re-caulk or replace weather stripping if needed
  • Clean your screens, but skip the power washer—it may damage your screens

Chimney & Roof

  • Schedule a chimney sweep if you haven’t had one in a year
  • Check the roofline and gutters for visible damage or wear

Gutters & Downspouts

  • Clear out leaves and debris
  • Look for sagging, cracks, or signs of leaks

Trees & Landscaping

  • Check for dead or leaning trees—trim or remove to avoid future disasters
  • Inspect deck railings, fences, and porch wood for damage or rot

Outdoor Entertaining Prep

  • Gas grills: Check hoses, clean burner jets, test all connections
  • Charcoal grills: Remove ash and grease buildup
  • Lawn gear: Tune up mowers, trimmers, and other tools
